TEALBY rider Tim Greig remains in the lead following round 2 of the International Flat Track Cup at Muhldorf in Southern Germany.
He arrived at the Bavarian 1000 metre sand track - the fastest of this European series, with average lap speeds of just under 100mph - already at number one from the first round and found plenty of action.
Close racing at these speeds with no fr
ont brakes adds to the adrenalin and means there’s no room for error!
The super quick purpose built Harley-Davidsons, which in the early heats had outpaced Tim’s ASR–Leisure.com Honda on the long straights, were clearly the bikes to beat . The more nimble and lighter Honda did, though, make up ground in the deep sandy corners to ensure Tim was still able to challenge at the front.
After the heats two Italians, Jacopo Monti & Marco Belli, lead the way and took pole positions for the final. Tim, along with Swiss rider Jan Jansen, joined them on the front row.
As the Formula 1 style start lights went out it was quick starting Tim who grabbed the holeshot into the first corner but on the back straight he was slip-streamed by the 3 Harley-Davidsons of his main competitors, who each made an early pass to lead after the first lap.
A close battle ensued at the front with the lead regularly changing hands until Marco Belli spectacularly crashed out, leaving Monti to take the win from Jansen and Tim Greig who had both remained in close contention to take the final podium positions.
Tim’s third place means that he retains his overall lead - of two points - in the championship going in to round 3 taking place in Austria this month. This venue hosts a 400m speedway track which should suit Tim and his bike and he’s looking forward to the challenge of continuing his recent success against Europe’s top competitors.
