Scorpions miss out at Redcar
The Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions were looking for an away win at Redcar last night but they came back disappointed after going down 50-40.
The Scorpions did lead 25-23 after eight races but a 5-1 heat advantage in heat 9 was followed up by another in heat 13 and the Bears were all but home and dry. Leading the scoring for the Scorpions was Magnus Karlsson who scored eight points.
The meeting opened with four consecutive drawn heats but it was the Scorpions who opened the deadlock with a 4-2 from Richard Hall and Carl Wilkinson in heat 5. Unfortunately in the next race Emiliano Sanchez was excluded after falling in the first bend and the Bears turned things around with a 5-1 from Gary Havelock and former Scorpion James Cockle.
Viktor Bergström and Magnus Karlsson combined for a 4-2 over Ty Proctor in heat 7 and when Carl Wilkinson defeated the young Aussie in the next race the Scorpions were back in the lead. However, after two pointless outings another former Scorpion, Josh Auty, combined with James Grieves, who had to start from the fifteen metre mark because of ploughing through the tapes, for a 5-1 to take the Bears into a two point lead.
Try as they might the Scorpions couldn't claim a heat advantage and in the end the Bears pulled away to claim the league points. After the meeting Team Manager Kenny Smith said "It was a fairly good meeting and I thought we were going to do it at one stage. Poor old Byron (Bekker) has got some clutch problems and he also blew up Rob's (Promoter Rob Godfrey) engine. Emiliano got caught up in the first turn and could have been invited back into the re-run but the lads were all trying. We're just looking forward to tomorrow now. Berwick have got Peterborough's Henning Bager in for Adrian Rymel as their number one but I think we'll be okay".
Tonight's meeting at the Eddie Wright Raceway is a Premier League clash against the Berwick Bandits. The Bandits sit just two places and two points below the Scorpions in the league table with racing starting at 7.30pm
