Rebels meetings could go either way

The Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions have a busy weekend of action with trips to the South West and the North East followed by a double-header home meeting on Bank Holiday Monday.
The action starts tonight (Friday) when the team travel to face the Somerset Rebels before venturing in the opposite direction to complete their Premier Trophy Group fixtures at Redcar on Saturday night.

The action then moves to the Eddie Wrig
ht Raceway on bank holiday Monday afternoon when the Scorpions take on the Somerset Rebels in the Premier League and this is followed by the Conference League Saints taking on the Weymouth Wildcats.

After losing their opening league match at Birmingham the Scorpions will be looking to open their Premier League account against the Rebels with Promoter Rob Godfrey believing the two meetings could both go either way.

“The tracks are similar,” he said. “Neither offers a big home track advantage but the racing should be fantastic. I can’t predict which way the meetings will go but that’s the beauty of two great race tracks.

“They produce incredible racing and the result isn’t predictable like at some places. We have an excellent team but they have to fight for home wins because of our great track. However, that same fighting spirit stands the team in good stead on our travels and we will spring our fair share of surprises on teams”.

Friday’s meeting at Somerset sees the Scorpions’ line-up alter with Viktor Bergström dropping down to reserve. The timing of the move is ideal with Bergström’s form having improved significantly over recent meetings. Moving in the opposite direction is Benji Compton who has added over a point to his starting average. He will line up in the number four race-jacket vacated by Bergström and the full Scorpions’ line-up for the weekend’s meetings is:

1. Andrew Moore, 2. Carl Wilkinson, 3. Magnus Karlsson, 4. Benji Compton, 5. Richard Hall, 6. Byron Bekker, 7. Viktor Bergstrom

On Saturday the Scorpions head north to Redcar as they complete their Premier Trophy Group fixtures. A win would make them favourites to finish second in the five-team group and Team Manager Kenny Smith would like to put one over one of his good friends “Redcar’s Team Manager is Brian Havelock and he’s a good mate of mine. It was great to do the double over George English at Newcastle and it would be brilliant to go up to Redcar and turn them over. Poor old Josh (former Scorpions’ rider Josh Auty) is having a poor time of it but no doubt he’ll pull a good meeting out of the bag against us. We’ll just go up there and see what we can do”.

Along with the return fixture between the Scorpions and Somerset on Monday afternoon the meeting also sees the Scunthorpe Saints in action. Their meeting follows on from the Scorpions’ match and the Saints look set to face their stiffest challenge of the season so far when the Weymouth Wildcats visit. Team Manager Malcolm Vasey believes his side can make it three wins out of three “It will be tough, no doubt about that.
