Market Rasen & Louth 1st XV 34 Coalville 1st XV 10

SATURDAY saw the eagerly anticipated top of the league clash in which Rasen played host to Leicestershire rivals Coalville.
The Rasen side, still not at full strength, managed to put together a performance of the highest quality in order to secure a joint spot at the top of Midlands 2 East North.

The contest pitted the silky skilled Leicester backline against the more powerful forward power of the Rasen pack, combined with the structured and well drilled defensive play instilled by head coach Simon Green and assistant Steve Kirkby.

The game started well for Rasen, who clearly had the upper hand in the scrum, and this provided a great platform for the backs to play off throughout the game.

It took less than 10 minutes to break the deadlock as Paul Cook showed great awareness and class in switching play down the blind side to score a quality opening try. Johns then converted securing an early 7-0 advantage.

Coalville responded by showing why they entered this contest with an unbeaten league record as their full back cut a great line through the defence and managed to offload to the supporting blind side wing forward who dotted down for an unconverted score.

Fortunately it wasn't long before the Rasen pack, who were simply outstanding throughout the match, made superb forward progress from a series of rucks, and from within the final quarter worked the ball wide to Bemrose who drew the man perfectly before Chamberlain cut inside the opposition centre and bulldozed his way to the line.

Johns again added the extras, resulting in a 14–5 advantage at the break.

Rasen suffered a disastrous start to the second half and Coalville pounced on a loose ball and spun the ball wide to their winger who finished off the move with ease for a second unconverted score.

This proved the last time Coalville got near the opposition line as the Willingham road men displayed great patience in their play and took their chances when they came.

The forward pack using runners including Cole, Hutchinson and Mitchell were simply unstoppable. Johns stretched the Rasen lead with a well struck penalty before Cook, playing possibly the best game of his season to date, broke through two tackles down the blind side and touched down for an unconverted score.

Matt Neesham was next on hand to add to Rasen's tally as once again great work from the forwards in the scrum released the Rasen full back to score and Johns successfully added the extras.

It was fitting a series of rucks and scrums deep in the Coalville half finished off the game as the pressure proved too much for the Leicester side and a rampaging Rob Mitchell charged over for an unconverted score, full time 34-10.
