BRIGG Men's Hockey Club made a fine start to their Yorkshire League season with a 3-0 win over Lincoln in the Yorkshire Premier League at Quibell Park.
Brigg scored two goals in a fine first half, taking the lead when Andrew Morris fired in a short corner and the hit was deflected into the net to give Brigg the early advantage.
Adam Marks set up the second when he swept forward into midfield and
exchanged passes with several colleagues to set up Andrew Reid who forced home a well placed shot from the middle of the circle.
A feature of Brigg's play was the use of Andrew Morris in a slightly deeper role.
The converted striker put in an excellent shift in midfield and also gave shelter to the Brigg defence with some fine chasing and tackling.
Marks was another to shine with a composed performance at right defender.
Brigg continued to threaten after the break and added a third goal when they were awarded a short corner and Andrew Reid netted his second from the set piece to make the game safe.
Graham Ward in the Brigg goal was rarely troubled.
Brigg also go through to the semi finals of the Lincolnshire County Championship with both Lincoln and Brigg having agreed to call the game double value after their Lincolnshire game was abandoned due to a flooded pitch last month.
Brigg are away at Ilkley this Saturday against Ben Rhydding.
l There was no joy however for Brigg 2nds and 3rds who both went down to stiff opposition. Brigg 2nds went down 5-0 at Leeds 2nd after having to play with effectively ten men for much of the game after Jon Whall got injured early on.
Credit goes to Grey Tennant who made his 2nd team league debut in goal and saved a penalty stroke to add to several fine saves.
Brigg 3rd went down to a strong Wakefield side 7-0.
l Any boys who would like to take up hockey can just turn up at 6.30pm at Winterton Comprehensive School astroturf on a Monday night or at Quibell Park for Colts training on a Wednesday.
