BRIGG Town’s next FA Trophy game will be played at the Hawthorns against Marine on October 18 after a 4-0 victory against Willenhall Town.
There was a strong wind behind Brigg in the first half and they used this to advantage to secure a two go
al lead before the break and then continued to play some excellent controlled football in the second period. Rick Day and Michael Jacklin were unavailable but Johnny Nicholls came in for his first start at home this season and he made a full contribution to a good all round team performance against a team, which won at Brigg earlier in the season.
Tom Spall cleared the ball from the goal area after the visitors attacked down the right wing in the second minute and then he tried a shot at goal from forty yards out but Luke Tilt got behind the ball to save easily. Leigh Herrick had to make a save low down to his right from Scott Stevenson’s shot. When the corner was played into the crowded area it was knocked out to Lee Chilton with appeals for a handling offence but his first time shot went past the post. Brigg opened the scoring after twenty five minutes when JACK MULDOON took control of a long clearance down the middle of the pitch before lobbing a shot over the head of Luke Tilt into the roof of the net. The visitors responded with Luke Findley curling a shot past the post after the ball was played in from the right wing followed by a shot on target from Brendan Kelly, which was well covered by Leigh Herrick. When Brigg attacked down the right wing, Jack Muldoon won a corner kick on the right and this flashed across the face of the goal with no finishing touch applied. However, a second goal was scored after thirty seven minutes when Johnny Nicholls won possession after Luke Tilt had blocked a goal bound shot at his near post and was able to pass the ball inside for JOHN BORLAND to strike it into the far corner of the net. Clearly encouraged with their success, Nathan Would went close with a shot from twenty five yards out and a long goal kick from Leigh Herrick was carried by the strong wind past the post at the other end of the pitch.
Against the wind in the second half, Brigg expected the visitors to enjoy possession but it was the home team who settled best and played the ball about with some neat passing moves. Scott Hellewell and Carl La Rocca were solid in the home team’s defence, with Alan Lamb and John Borland controlling mid field. A free kick from Shaun Findley from thirty yards out flew past the Brigg goal but when Brigg won possession, Paul Ashton started to deliver telling crosses into the opponents’ penalty area from the right wing. The third goal was scored after seventy- three minutes following a neat build up on the left wing with the ball moving from John Borland, Nathan Would and Johnny Nicholls on to JACK MULDOON, who struck a firm shot into the back of the net.
