Blooming blossom halt the spring in Rasen's step
AFTER A good run of form that brought them close to the top of the table, Market Rasen suffered a surprising six-wicket reverse to bottom team Blossom Way Hainton at Rase Park on Saturday.
Batting first, Rasen lost the early wicket of Gary Bierlein, but with Richard Boryszczuk supported by Jon Stephenson going well the home side reached 80 for the loss of only two wickets.
A mid innings collapse, with only Karl Bierlein (22) offering much resistance, saw the innings fall away to 139 all out.
Blossom Way Hainton had no trouble knocking off the runs despite an early wicket for young seamer Darren Salmon which gave Rasen hope. There was some tight bowling later on by Gary Bierlein.
Hainton easily reached their target at 140 for four without too much trouble. The visitors had opening bat Pearson with 86 not out to thank for their steady progress towards their target.
l Rasen's Sunday team had an easy win when they beat North Scarle by 9 wickets.
With North Scarle opting to make first use of an even-paced track at Rase Park, Rasen’s opening attack of Graeme Bell and Dale Chambers set about their task with enthusiasm. Chambers (2 for 16) broke through in the second over and both men bowled briskly and accurately, with Bell (4 for 25) reaping the rewards of line and length. He consistently hit the 'corridor of uncertainty’ and the batsmen had no answer.
North Scarle staggered to 36 for 6, with only Dixon (28) playing an innings of any real substance, although Watson (17) struck a couple of lusty blows towards the end.
After the rain prompted an early tea, Matt Rutherford and Andy Richley (2 for 8) wrapped things up at the end leaving North Scarle on 77 all out with 12 overs spare.
Bell fell to Hogg, who was the pick of the North Scarle bowling, but Chris Higgins (16*) joined Matt Rutherford (36*) to see Rasen over the line.
The Sunday side’s next game will be away at Boston in the Premier Cup on July 13.
