EDITOR – I am delighted once again to let the residents of Market Rasen know that the Christmas tree will arrive very soon, and also to remind the children to bring their parents along to visit Santa by the tree in the Market Place at 4pm on Christmas Eve.
More than 60 years ago a group of local businessmen and tradesmen joined resources to provide the town with its first ever Christmas tree. In time the Market Rasen Children’s Christmas Tree Committee was formed to ensure this tradition continued.
We have sourced trees from the Forestry Commission and other commercial growers over the years with the support of committee members, who raise funds through donations and raffles etc, as well as erecting the tree and helping Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.
The Christmas tree has become the major cost to the committee in recent years due to annual above-inflation increases in charges for the tree and transportation.
We are, however, delighted to tell you that for Christmas 2011 we have had a tree donated to the town by Lincolnshire Lanes Log Cabins of East Firsby.
On behalf of the committee and the residents of Market Rasen we are very appreciative of their support and generosity and look forward to seeing their tree resplendent in the Market Place.
This annual spectacle would not have been able to continue over the years without financial support. The local businesses and people of Market Rasen have always responded well to the fund raising and must be congratulated for their contribution to the success of this exciting event.
We therefore appeal to your readers to look out for the raffle tickets around the town and to invest in the opportunity to win a cash prize or Christmas treat.
