Young Brigg athletes’ gold rush at competition

A team of talented air cadets from Brigg have won an impressive nine gold medals at a regional athletics competition.

The youngsters - competing in the Trent Wing Air Cadets athletics competition at King George V Stadium in Grimsby - won three bronze, two silver and nine gold medals in a range of track and field events.

The team of 28 cadets was the largest Brigg has entered in recent years - and the boys and girls were committed to training.

The squadron’s gold rush of the day came from several cadets, who pulled off some stunning performances with cadet Katie Shackles taking first place in the class D girls 800m.

Katie then followed this up with gold in the 300m.

Not to be outdone on the track cadet Chad Dawson was hot on her heels, taking gold in the blue ribbon event of the class A boys 100m. He also threw a fantastic Javelin landing himself another gold.

Cadet corporal Ozzie Lennon came away with gold for his sterling effort in the class C boys high jump. And the boys 4 x 100m relay team ran to victory to land themselves with gold medals all round.

Cadet Chad Dawson competed in the class A Boys 200m to come away with a silver and cadet Lawrence Phillips received a silver in the class A boys high jump.

Cadets who received bronze medals were Molly Baker in the class D girls 1500m, cadet Matty White in the class A boys 800m and cadet Katie McCabe in the class D girls 200m.

As well as walking away with a haul of medals, the squadron won the overall trophy for the junior boys, beating off competition from 29 other squadrons in Trent Wing. The junior girls team came third overall.

Cadets Chad Dawson, Katie Shackles and cadet corporal Ozzie Lennon will be part of the Trent Wing Athletics team that will compete in the Central and East Regional championships in Leicester.

Flt Lt Gill Wills officer commanding 2222 squadron said: “I am absolutely delighted with the results.

“On the day all the cadets pulled together, and produced some fantastic results.”
