Plans are under way to transform Market Rasen into ‘Lincolnshire’s finest market town’ and back to the popular hub it once was.
Market Rasen Town Council has recruited market strategic officer Philip Cole specifically to promote the town’s Tuesday, Friday and Saturday markets.
Philip - who looks after bookings for the award-winning Market Rasen Business Improvement Group (MR BIG) monthly markets - said: “Ideally we are looking to build Market Rasen into Lincolnshire’s finest market town but are under no illusions it will take time and effort.
“We do have a committed town council who are fully behind restoring the markets to former glory.
“Our town has a long history of successful markets which cannot be understated.
“With a superb central setting and backdrop and parking facilities, we do have lots going for the market.”
Philip will be visiting markets in Mablethorpe, Louth, Horncastle and Brigg with the aim of recruiting traders.
He said: “Market Rasen used to be renowned - you couldn’t even get a market stall because they were so popular.”
Other plans include making the market more accessible from George Street and attracting customers from the town’s auction shed on Tuesdays.
Philip, who hopes to see improvements by this time next year, said: “Markets complement high streets and sell things you can’t always get in the shops.
“Markets have the advantage in that they don’t have the overheads of shops.
“And in many cases they can sell cheaper goods.”
The markets run from 9am to 3pm.
Discounts for stalls are currently available.
