A HEATED war of words dominated last Thursday’s inaugural meeting of the committee charged with organising two gardening events in Market Rasen town centre this summer.
Little was confirmed at the meeting other than that there will be a gardening based show in the town centre on June 4 and a second open gardens and flower event in July.
This will be as well as the Market Rasen Country Festival and Gardeners’ Fair, being held at the racecourse on Saturday, May 21.
Despite having an extensive agenda to work through, Thursday’s meeting was dominated by arguments between the organising committee of the town centre gardening events, Market Rasen Development Trust directors, who are putting on the Country Festival in May, and traders, who said they felt they could not support all three shows.
Steve Penney, of Waltham Herbs in Caistor, said: “For us to see it move from the Market Place to the racecourse, we saw one of our best events of the year taken away in a way that we saw as very detrimental with no consultation with traders.
“Myself, I knew that was not going to work in the same way it did in the town. I know from my customers year on year that they enjoy that event.”
