One of Lincolnshire's leading UKIP county councillors has defected to the Conservative Party, just weeks before the county council elections.

Councillor Daniel McNally, who represents Louth Marsh, will stand as a Conservative candidate for his division (which has been renamed Saltfleet and the Cotes under a recent boundary review) at the election on May 4.

The leader of East Lindsey District Council and newly-elected chairman of the Louth and Horncastle Conservative Association, Coun Craig Leyland, told the Leader: “This is great news, and shows the strength of the Conservatives both locally and nationally.

“Coun McNally is a hard working councillor and will be an asset to the group and party locally.”

The leader of Lincolnshire County Council, Coun Martin Hill, was equally pleased with the news of the defection.

He said: “We always knew Daniel was a Tory at heart, and we are sure he will work hard for all his residents.”

Coun McNally’s defection comes at a difficult time for UKIP, which recently saw two of its borough councillors quit the party in Boston - while their only MP, Douglas Carswell, also quit the party at the weekend.
