A COMMUNITY-RUN swimming pool is struggling to keep its head above water and could close in the new year if financial help and support is not found.
Wragby Swimming Pool has run out of money after years of financial troubles.
Hardworking volunteers on Wragby Swimming Pool Committee are desperately seeking out options.
But, with a huge oil bill looming, financial pressure has reached boiling point.
Committee chairman June Elborn said an emergency meeting was called last week to discuss options.
As a result, when the pool reopens in January, after the usual two week closure for Christmas, there will no longer be public swimming on Saturday and Sunday, and after 7.30pm on weekdays.
The cost of admission has also been increased by 50p.
June explained how it has always been tough balancing the books.
She said: “I was doing the accounts at the weekend and realised we weren’t going to make it.
“We are scratching around to find money to be able to open in January. We need to buy 1,000 litres of oil to be able to open.”
June said that letters appealing for help have been sent out to committee members, local councils and MPs.
The pool is used by hundreds of pupils at Wragby Primary School, along with groups of disabled people and the over 60s.
June added: “If it closes, this will affect the most vulnerable people.”
An urgent appeal has been made for much-needed support.
She said: “We do desperately need people to come and help. We are appealing for financial help as well as practical help via fundraising.
“Unfortunately all the organisations I have tried don’t want to know.
“Grants are only available for projects and not running costs and as far as projects go it’s not something we can even contemplate right now, because they will want us to part fund ourselves.
“We are not in debt – yet. That is the problem it will happen soon if we don’t get some sort of boost to our finances.”
Despite the obstacles, June is not giving up on the pool without a fight.
She said: “Believe me the last thing any of us want to do is give up. We have struggled too hard over the last 12 months.”
Wragby Swimming Pool has been open since 1998.
