West Lindsey can replace County Council says leader

West Lindsey District Council leader Jeff Summers is backing calls to scrap Lincolnshire County Council.

Last month, Lib-Dem county councillor John Marriott proposed axing the county and several district councils, replacing them with unitary authorities, which would provide all the services. The move, he said, would save ‘millions’, as well as bring councils closer to their communities.

However, West Lindsey council leader Jeff Summers suggests the districts could provide county services themselves and may not need to combine with other neighbouring districts.

“Who can deliver and has their ear to the ground and understand what residents want and how best to deliver?” he asked.

“We are talking about a massive change in council philosophy and the provision of services. It would take years to implement,” he said.

Thus, the subject might be something left to consider after the 2015 General Election.
