UKIP launches its Gainsborough branch at a meeting in Claxby’s Viking Centre tomorrow evening at 7pm.
Claxy resident Dr Howard Thompson, former secretary of Lincoln and Gainsborough UKIP, said the new branch split off from Lincoln is to reflect rising membership and the large geographical spread of the former branch.
Some 64 ‘active’ members will transfer to Gainsborough but new members can still join in time for tomorrow’s meeting.
The meeting will elect a branch chairman, secretary and treasurer.
Dr Thompson, a former RAF squadron leader who has worked in Lincolnshire for more than 40 years, and former councillor candidate, said he is running for chairman.
However, a prospective parliamentary candidate will be decided at a later date, hopefully by mid-October.
The engineer said he has a candidate in mind, a ‘local’ person who has stood before, which he would prefer, but if he doesn’t want to stand, UKIP will advertise the vacancy.
Dr Thompson accepted sitting MP Sir Edward Leigh is seen as having made “a great contribution” and he has a large majority, but UKIP came close to removing the Tories from County Hall. “Clearly we would be campaigning hard to show support for our party and change the political dynamics as a whole,” he said.
