CADNEY cum Howsham Parish Council has failed to meet its responsibilities to taxpayers because it has not reported how it has used and protected their money.
That’s the verdict of the District Auditor in a public interest report published this week.
The report says the council has ‘failed in an important statutory duty’ by not producing an annual return for the financial year to March 31, 2011.
More importantly, the council ‘failed to account to its council taxpayers for the use and safeguarding of their money’.
District auditor Jackie Bellard said: “The people of Cadney cum Howsham have the right to know how their local taxes have been used by the council.
“Despite my repeated requests, the council has failed to submit its annual return. This should not happen again.”
The report must be considered by the council in public within a month, when the council must decide what action to take in response to the report’s recommendations.
