Play equipment on De Aston Field looks set to be installed as early as next month after the town council struck a deal with a supplier.

Members will be recommended to agree to spend around £8,000 on eight pieces of equipment when they meet next week.

Town mayor John Matthews said the council needs to meet a deadline to help secure a grant and the supplier is having a “summer sale.”

In addition, the council is to refurbish the skatepark in the Mill Road Playing Fields after signing a contract on Friday.

The work, which will bring the skate ramp up to a higher standard, will cost “just over £3,000.”

Longer term, the council plans to replace the existing skate park with a bigger one. It has been meeting with youth groups on the issue.

However, this £60-70,000 project will need a mix of public and private funding so is “realistically” 3-5 years away. The young would also help fundraise, Mayor Matthews said.
