Community money from a Brigg store could be used to maintain the town’s Millennium Green.

That was an idea thrown out at the monthly meeting of Brigg Town Council.

“Our gift to the town is of ‘bodies and money’!” was the message given by Brigg Town Clerk Clare Davis after a surprise phone call to her office from the Tesco Community Liaison Officer at the Barnard Avenue store.

The clerk told councillors: “He was offering money and bodies for some community input in the town. It was an
offer that he said he was keen for us to accept.”

Town Mayor James Truepenny, chairing the meeting, showed enthusiasm to buy into the community gift Tesco was offering the town.

“The Millennium Green comes immediately to mind but we don’t own it yet,” said the Mayor, mindful of the delicate negotiations taking place over the site on Elwes Street.

However, other councillors felt the company had issues to address first over land it already owns. The Mayor urged Councillors to use the August recess to put a shopping list together to reply to the offer by Tesco – and the Millennium Green is sure to be on most councillors’ list.
