RUNNERS, get on your marks, for a brand new road race launching in Rasen later this year.

As reported in the Rasen Mail last week, lots of Rasenites and Caistorians took to the streets of Lincoln earlier this month for the city’s 10k race, either for charity, or just for fun.

But now the Mail can exclusively reveal a new series of road races are set to be launched later this year by West Lindsey District Council, culminating in a 10k run in Market Rasen.

The West Lindsey Run Series involves three races, starting with a 5k at Saxilby on September 25, a 5k in Gainsborough on October 23, and the finale, a 10k race in Market Rasen on Sunday, November 13.

Chris Farrell, sports and community development officer, said: “Road running is a popular sporting event which any age or ability can do.

“Through extensive work within the district and from observation of othr successful events by Lincolnshire councils such as Lincoln 10k run and Mablethorpe half marathon, it was found that this is a very popular and hugely in demand type of event.

“It has been researched in active people surveys that many people are involved in running and seek these type of events in Lincolnshire and West Lindsey.

“West Lindsey district is missing a key event that can not only increase sporting participation and healthy lifestyles, but also attract new people to towns and villages, which includes people from outside the county.”

The council hope that the event will also bring more business into Market Rasen and add to the local economy.

The route outlined by organisers takes participants from Market Rasen Racecourse, down Legsby Road towards Dog Kennel Woods, around the woodland and back down Legsby Road, finishing at the racecourse again.

Mr Farrell said: “Each race will be held on a Sunday morning and we estimate between 800-1000 runners taking part in each race.

“The routes which we have decided upon bring as little disruption to the area as possible and we are currently looking at getting these routes affiliated with UK athletics.”

The road closure is expected to be in place for around 1.5 hours.

Diversions around Legsby Road will be in place.
