Obituary: William Raymond Gell

The Service of Celebration for the life of William Raymond Gell, aged 90 of Market Rasen, was held at Market Rasen Methodist Church, following a private cremation service in Lincoln.

Ray moved to Market Rasen in 1955 joining Phil Cox to form the well known Family Butchers, Cox & Gell in Queen Street, a business which he maintained and developed until his retirement in 1986.

Prior to moving to Market Rasen, Ray worked in the butchery department in Sainsbury’s in Nottingham as assistant manager, having started his working life in the local butchers in his home village of Blidworth, Nottinghamshire.

During WW2, Ray joined the RAF as ground crew, mainly in Bomber Command serving in North Africa and India as well as more locally in Lincolnshire, where he met his wife Lilian Garnett.

Ray had been a member of the Methodist Church since moving to Market Rasen and was a well known and active member of the local church, having served for many years as Property Steward.

He was also a founder member of the Methodist Church Men’s Group, acting as treasurer and always playing a major part in the annual Men’s Weekend.

He was also a member of Market Rasen and District Probus Club and was a familiar figure in the town until a few months before his death when ill health forced him to move away.

He died in The Vale Care Home, Bolsover, Derbyshire.

The Rev Andrew Lomax officiated at the services and arrangements were by J Marshall of Market Rasen.
