THE death has occurred of Sister Mary Swaby at the Motherhouse of the Medical Missionaries of Mary, Drogheda, Ireland.
Sister Mary Swaby was born in Lincolnshire in 1947. She received her early education in Louth and trained as a pharmacist at the University of Aston, Birmingham and St George’s Hospital, Lincolnshire.
Before joining the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM) in 1974, she spent two years as a lay missionary in Nigeria, where she worked as a pharmacist at the MMM Hospital in Ibadan.
After her religious training in MMM, Sister Mary was assigned to Tanzania, where she served for more than 30 years. During this time she worked as a pharmacist in MMM hospitals and in several MMM leadership positions.
Due to ill health, she returned to Ireland in December 2011.
She is survived by her step-mother, Louie Swaby of Market Rasen; two brothers, Andrew and his wife, Patricia, of Rochdale, Lancashire, and Martin and his wife, Mary, of Leeds, Yorkshire; one uncle, one aunt, five nieces and nephews, and two grandnephews.
