THE funeral service for Robert (Bob) William Mercer, aged 80 years of Rothwell, was held at the parish church.
The Rev Canon Ian Robinson officiated at the service and arrangements were by J W Varlow and Son of Caistor
Bob was a good gymnast and enjoyed boxing.
He was also a keen musician, playing the piano at local events in Grimsby.
He was drafted for military service and served his time in Burma as a warrant officer in the Army. However, he contracted Malaria and returned to England, where he spent a long time recovering in hospital.
He married his childhood sweetheart Jeanne and they celebrated their diamond wedding together. They moved to Rothwell in the early 1950s and he was a teacher of English and history at Caistor Yarborough School.
He also gave his service as chairman of Rothwell Parish Council and oversaw the well being of the village for many years.
He will be sadly missed by his wife Jeanne, daughter Gill and son David.
