Market Rasen Town Mayor John Matthews has been unfairly targeted for abuse over using a disabled parking space in the Tesco car park.

A picture of his car using the space has been posted on Facebook and passed around.

However, Mayor Matthews said he has a Blue Badge, which was on show in his car, though he does not know when the picture was taken.

The mayor said in 2012, his GP referred him to the Mobility Assessment Centre as he had acute Osteo Arthritis.

“This means total disintegration of the cartilages and bone surface in both my knees. I was awarded a Blue Badge by Lincolnshire County Council from 10/12/2012, valid for three years. In the early summer of 2013, I had bi-lateral joint replacement surgery, which is both knee joints replaced with prosthesis implants, at the same time.

“Whilst the surgery has reduced the pain dramatically, I still have mobility problems which is accentuated by damp or cold weather. I do not abuse the Blue Badge facility and if there is a vacant space in ‘normal’ parking I will use it, but when I am struggling the facility often helps. Either way until 09/12/2015 I hold a valid badge,” he said.
