Staking their claim on hedges

Step back in time and see a traditional country craft on display this weekend, as a national competition comes to the area .

The Brocklesby Estate, near Great Limber, plays host to the National Hedge
Laying Championships this
Saturday, October 27.

More than 100 competitors from across the UK are expected at the event, organised by the National Hedge Laying Society, to compete for the coveted title of Supreme
Champion.

“Our hedgerows are the green veins of Britain and help define our countryside,” said Nigel Adams, chairman of the National Hedge Laying Society.

“Hedge laying is an ancient craft, but one that can play a part in preserving our countryside.”

The competition is based on eight different styles of hedge laying and each person is required to cut and lay 10 yards of hedge in five hours.

In the process they will between them utilise 200 sawn wood stakes and 2,000 hazel stakes, together with three and a half miles of hazel binders to hold the hedges in position.

Judging takes place in the afternoon, when points will be awarded for the cutting, neatness and appearance of the hedge and adherence to the traditional style being cut.

The event is also expected to attract a large number of spectators.

As well as the competition, there will also be displays of historic tools and vintage tractors, arts and crafts stalls, trade stands and other related exhibitions.

The Brocklesby Hunt will have a parade of hounds near the marquee area.

The competition site is alongside the road running
between the village of Great Limber and the B1211 - between Brocklesby Park School and The Brocklesby Kennels - and will take place from 9am to 2pm, with prize giving taking place at 4pm.

Entry is free to spectators.

Entrance to the site is off the B1211 at Brocklesby; signs and marshals will guide traffic to the parking area.

For safety reasons, the road will be closed to traffic from Brocklesby to the A18 at Limber crossroads.
