School team is in the saddle for regional success

Horse riders from Horncastle's Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School have qualified for the National Championships in October.

Several pupils travelled to Arena UK in Grantham to take part in dressage and show jumping classes at the Regional qualifying competition.

This follows on from their success at the prestigious National Schools Equestrian Association (NSEA) Winter Championships last year.

It was Year Eight student Ava Vernon who was the star rider.

She completed the double, winning both the 90cm class on Mister Pebbles and the 110cm with Rockin’ Rosie.

Ava qualified for the national event, which will be held at Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire.

Morgan Bennett and Grange Gadget were also placed in the 90cm class.

The event at Grantham also saw the school enter a dressage team for the first time.

The team was made up of Year Eight student Abigail Lawson, riding Springleaze Hope & Glory, and Year Ten students Rosie Finney on Lechryd Lorra, and Morgan Bennett on Salik.

The girls rode well and will be joining Ava at the national event in October.

Unfortunately, the pony of fellow team member Holly Newton (Year Nine) went lame before the event, but she will be joining her team members at the finals.

Gail Newton, team manager, said: “We are delighted with the recent results and look forward to competing at the National finals in October.

“The QEGS equestrian team was only formed in 2014 and they have been very successful during this time.”
