School teacher comes down with swine flu

Thursday 1pm A LOCAL village school is to remain open even though one of its teachers has been stricken with swine flu.

The teacher, at Ellison Boulter's Primary School at Scothern, has come down with an attack of the potentially fatal disease, which has claimed more than 6,000 cases in the UK so far, with three fatalities - all people with other health problems - and more than 70,000 worldwide.

The teacher, who came down with flu like symptoms last week, was confirmed as having the disease last Friday and is being treated with antibiotics at home and is said to be responding well.

It is the fourth case of the disease in the county.

The Health Protection Agency has advised the teacher was not symptomatic while at school, so no one at the school has been identified as a contact requiring any follow up.

NHS Lincolnshire said they were continuing to work closely with local agencies and stakeholders to monitor the situation and respond appropriately.

Dr Mandy Bretman, consultant in Public Health for NHS Lincolnshire, said: "As ever, the message remains always cover your nose and mouth using a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues where germs can linger and wash your hands regularly."

"If you have returned from an affected area, or 'hot spot' in the UK, have flu like symptoms and are worried, firstly stay at home. Next, either look at the information on the NHS Choices website, www.nhs.uk, or call the National Swine Flu Information Line - 0800 1 513 513.

"If you have further concerns contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647. You will receive a welcome message which advises what to do if you are calling about swine flu and calls will be answered by trained health advisors. Where appropriate, callers will be transferred to nurse advisors who will assess their condition.

"Finally, if you are still concerned you can contact your local GP over the phone for advice."
