A call is going out for Market Rasen residents to help save one of the town’s historic buildings for the benefit of the community.
The former station house and ticket office has gone on the market and now the Market Rasen Vision Group has called a meeting to discuss the future of the buildings.
One of those keen to see the buildings saved for the town is Market Rasen District and Town Councillor Ken Bridger.
“There is real interest within the town to purchase this listed building and bring it back to its former glory,” he said.
“This is positive move as this is the first experience visitors have when arriving by train in Market Rasen.
“Is it right for the town to save this building? Come along and have your say.”
Built in 1848, the station buildings were made redundant during the 1970s.
And while the Station Adoption Group has worked hard to enhance the look of the outside of the building over recent years with artwork and planters, and the far end of the station building has been turned into an impressive residence, the rest of the buildings have been neglected and fallen into decay.
The Grade II listed property, on sale for offers over £50,000, consists of an L-shaped entrance area, with five other rooms and currently has listed building consent for office accommodation.
And whoever buys the property will be undertaking a full renovation project.
“The lofty height and graciousness of the station buildings would make it very suitable for community uses,” said Lynda Bowen, another town councillor enthusiastic about the potential project.
“Lots of community involvement is needed; would people in town be willing to offer their time and talents to assist in the purchase and renovation of this building?”
The Vision meeting will be held in the Festival Hall on Monday, November 11, from 7pm and will include more information about the Community Right to Bid.
