Mrs May was formally announced as the country’s PM yesterday (Wednesday) and Woodhall Spa butchers shop RJ Hirst is planning on sending her the gift after she declared how much she enjoyed them.

Mrs May, who was home secretary at the time, visited the village last April when on the campaign trail with the now Horncastle and Louth MP Victoria Atkins.

She called in at the store in Station Road, owned by Russell and Sadie Hirst, and took away some world-famous Lincolnshire sausages.

“She bought 2lb of Lincolnshire sausages and we received a letter about two days later about how much she had enjoyed them,” said Russell.

Russell said he was ‘shocked’ to see the home secretary in his shop, and simply said: “Hello Theresa, how are you?”.

He added: “She was very very personable. We had a quick chat for about 10 minutes. She was very interested in us.”

When asked if he would be sending the PM some more, Russell said: “I think that is very definitely something that we will do.”

Mr Russell also backed Mrs May to lead the country.

“I get the impression that the country is in a very safe pair of hands.”
