A police statement said: “Would like to make you aware of a crime trend which has been identified recently, where males are going around in vehicles (vans, cars) offering TVs for sale. But when the buyer later opens up the packaging, the TV inside is found to be broken or smashed.

“If you are buying any items from a private seller, in person, always take reasonable steps to ensure the property you are buying is in working order.”

• If someone tries to sell you a television in similar circumstances, make a note of any descriptions and vehicle details and report it through 101, or by ringing Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk.
