Palace garden party a day to remember for Dennis

A Market Rasen resident has had a '˜day to remember' after being invited to a Royal Garden Party.

Dennis Cotton (83) was nominated to attend the event for his voluntary work at The Poplars Care Home in Market Rasen, where he has lived for the past 18 years.

It was his first trip to London and he had one word for the
occasion - “smashing”.

“We saw the Queen up close and we stood next to Prince Philip,” said Dennis.

“The Queen spent a lot of time talking to people and she looked so happy.

“The whole day was just smashing. It’s a thing I will
remember all my life.”

Dennis received the surprise invite on Christmas Eve.

“It was the best Christmas present ever,” said Dennis, who chose senior carer Di Bray to
accompany him on his royal venture.

“I was delighted Dennis invited me along,” said Di.

“We had a fantastic day and Dennis deserved to be there for all he does.”

Over the years, Dennis has looked after the gardens at The Poplars and continues to shop and collect newspapers for his fellow residents.

“I like to help people,” said Dennis.

While in London, Di and her husband Pete took Dennis on a whistle-stop tour of the city.

“It’s all rush (in London), I’m not used to that,” said Dennis.

“I enjoyed it, but I don’t think I will be going back.”
