LOCAL flower clubs have helped transform Lincoln Cathedral with a breath taking display of flowers from all over the world - and at its heart were the clubs from Market Rasen and Caistor with their inspired displays.

Tens of thousands of blooms from every corner of the globe were turned into horses, chariots, flames and even King Midas for the Olympic-inspired Flower Festival - Dreams of Gold.

The event, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, involved around 200 enthusiasts from 26 flower arranging clubs across the county, who spent three days transforming the cathedral into a swathe of colours, smells and sights before the doors were thrown open to the public.

And this year, visitors were also treated to artwork specially commissioned from world-renowned paper sculptor Richard Sweeney - including four life-sized horse sculptures, created using sheets of A1 paper.

Displays included a running track in the Chapter House and a swimming pool in the cloisters, plus depictions of cycling, sailing and equestrian sports – all created using thousands of flowers shipped to the city from every continent.

Market Rasen club member Di Smith had her own challenge - to recreate the Battle of Marathon, when the Spartans fought the Persian army and one man famously ran the first marathon.

In all, the Market Rasen Club staged two team exhibits and two individual creations - a lot of input for a small club, sh.wing their wealth of talent.

This is the seventh time the cathedral has staged a flower festival and it included 130 stunning floral arrangements designed to reflect the spirit, history and international flavour club of the 2012 and past Olympics.
