Market Rasen Town Council finally co-opt after heated question time
A heated debate at last night’s Market Rasen Town Council meeting ended with Nigel Cook being co-opted onto the authority.
The town council decided to co-opt neither Carol Syke or Mr Cook at its January meeting leading to widespread criticism from the town’s residents, Edward Leigh MP and the town’s district and county councillor Burt Keimach.
After the Rasen Mail intervened the town council was forced to re-run its co-option process at its meeting on Wednesday.
Both candidates were asked to make fresh presentations to the council, after which Nigel Cook was co-opted onto the authority, gaining six votes to Carol Skye’s two, with two abstentions.
But, both candidates had difficult questions put to them by councillors, Mr Cook was accused of making a personal attack against Coun Martin Harvey in a letter he wrote to this newspaper questioning elections. Ms Skye was asked why she wanted to sit on a council she had called for a vote of no confidence in.
Ms Skye said that at the time she made that comment she felt the council was not following its procedures and a vote of no confidence would be needed if it did not co-opt. Mr Cook added that he stood by all comments he made regarding the town council.
