Local schools march for road safety
Wednesday, 6am: SOME of the local schools will be walking from their school gates, this morning, Wednesday at 10am, in an attempt to stop speeding drivers and break a world record for the largest 'walking bus'.
Market Rasen and Normanby by Spital primary schools are amongst the local schools joining tens of thousands of other children across the UK taking part in the record-breaking walking bus, co-ordinated by road safety charity Brake.
The event aims to raise awareness about the appalling number of children killed and hurt on foot by fast traffic, and to raise funds for the charity's work supporting families bereaved and injured by road crashes.
Shockingly, between five and six children are killed or seriously injured while walking every day on UK roads. In the East Midlands, 705 children on foot are killed or injured on roads each year, which is nearly two children a day.
A survey of 1,300 parents across the UK by Brake, released today to coincide with the march, found that half (49%) said the road where they lived was plagued by speeding drivers. Two in three (65%) thought they needed a 20mph limit outside their home - while only a further 16% said they already had one. 20mph zones are normal in many residential areas in Europe but much rarer here despite proof that they radically reduce child casualties.
