The Liberal Democrats are being tight-lipped over who is in the running to fight Sir Edward Leigh in next year’s General Election.
Market Rasen-based party activist Guy Grainger of the East Midlands Liberal Democrats declined to comment on how many had applied, or who they were, likening the process to the confidential recruitment of other professionals.
His ‘no comment’ comes as their Conservative opponents say it is ”surprising” the Lib-Dems also doubted their ability to win the seat in 2015, as reported last week, despite being the main opposition on West Lindsey District Council.
“It seems strange to be selecting a candidate, only to put a millstone of expected failure around their neck. I understand that this is the second time the vacancy has been advertised and no-one wanted it first time around,” said Gainsborough Conservative Association secretary Giles McNeil.
Sir Edward has been Gainsborough’s MP since 1983 and the association was “proud to have re-adopted Sir Edward in March last year,” he said.
