Jamie makes Paralympic final in British record time

BINBROOK athlete Jamie Carter has made it through to the final of the 200m in his Paralympic debut, but it took a record-breaking performance.

The 17-year-old looked calm and focussed as he was introduced to the crowd at the first heat of the T34 event.

The roar of the crowd - which includes his family and many friends who had made the trip from Lincolnshire must have spurred him on.

Having world record holder Mohamed Hammadi on the inside, Jamie knew it was going to be a tough race.

But Jamie pulled out all the stops to achieve a personal best time of 30.85 and break his own British record - but that still left him fifth in the heat.

With only the first three guaranteed a place, Jamie faced an agonising wait to see if he would qualify as one of the two fastest losers.

The second heat saw Tunisian athlete Walid Ktila storm to a win - breaking the world, Paralympic and African records.

But the fourth placed athlete failed to match Jamie’s time, so Jamie managed to clinch a place in the final.
