Rare survivors from World War Two will go under the hammer at a Market Rasen auction house this week.

A pocket watch and binoculars from a crashed German bomber are among the 850 lots at the collectors items and antique furniture sale being held this Thursday, March 21, by Perkins George Mawer & Co in the town’s Queen Street.

“There has already been a lot of interest in the items,” said auctioneer Mike Perkins.

“Despite the economic situation, interest in collectable items is still there, especially when the items are rare.”

The pilot’s pocket watch and GP Goerz Berlin binoculars in a pig skin case were retrieved from a Luftwaffe Dornier 217-M1 that crashed in Legbourne, near Louth, on March 19 1944.

The aircraft was one of 50 detailed to bomb Hull, but this aircraft dropped its bombs on Kenwick Hall, before it was shot down and then crashed on the outskirts of the village.

According to the report on the Heritage Gateway website, one of the aircrew baled out and was captured; the others didn’t survive.

And there are more World War Two items in this week’s sale too.

Another lot includes a metal first aid tin and all its contents, crude fishing tackle and a large metal holder containing a selection of Atlantic and Pacific sea charts - all from an American ship’s lifeboat and washed up on the beach at Theddlethorpe.

For those not interested in war memorabilia, the sale also includes many other items of interest.

“This is a big sale, with collections from various vendors, and there are plenty of hunting prints and books which we know will be of great interest to local folks,” added Mr Perkins.

Viewing for the sale takes place tonight, Wednesday March 20, from 2pm to 7pm and from 8am on the morning of the sale.

The sale itself starts at 9.30am.
