A memorial to bomber crews lost during the dark days of World War Two has been saved for future generations.

Until recently, the site at the former RAF Binbrook was owned by the company Winchester Marine.

But while generously allowing RAF Binbrook Heritage Centre and the Lightning Association to use the site, they were unable to offer long-term security of tenure.

Now, the two groups have managed to acquire the site and the memorial park to the brave bomber crews can be developed further and preserved forever.

“Having ownership now means we can move on to applying for grants and setting up a trust,” said Heritage Centre project co-ordinator Ray Whiteley.

“ This is an excellent result for us and a foundation for the future.”

Avenues of trees have been planted, with each one representing a crew member of aircraft that failed to return.

As the memorial park develops it will become a haven for wildlife and a place of tranquility and solitude for those who wish to remember missing relatives and friends
