Five-star Lindsey cleans up to claim silver award
WEST Lindsey is now officially one of the cleanest places in Britain.
The district council has come second in the small population category at this year’s Clean Britain Awards.
Secret inspectors visited the area in August and assessed things like general litter, chewing gum and smoking-related litter, fly-tipping, graffiti and the provision and condition of litter bins. The council got a near perfect score and was awarded five stars.
Chairman of WLDC’s prosperous communities committee Coun Malcolm Parish said a lot hard work has paid off.
He said: “I think that it is fantastic news that not only have we got a silver award, but we have been given five stars for the cleanliness of our area.
“The street cleaners have done a remarkable job, but we must also thank residents for taking the time to keep their community areas spotless.”
The council is one of nine local authorities to receive awards at a ceremony, hosted by BAFTA award-winning comedian and impressionist Alistair McGowan, at the NEC in Birmingham.
WLDC’s operational services manager Glyn Pilkington said: “I am extremely proud of the street cleansing team and the high standards they achieve on a daily basis and this award is recognition of that achievement.
“I am particularly pleased by the five-standard award, you can’t get better than that.”
Chartered Institution of Wastes Management chief executive Steve Lee said: “Our communities deserve well-maintained and attractive public places and the Clean Britain Awards recognise and reward the efforts made by councils and other organisations to keep our local areas clean and welcoming.
“The quality of our local environment contributes directly to our sense of well-being and civic pride and plays an important role in improving the economic prosperity of our towns, cities and rural districts.”
