Emu birth springs a surprise
Tuesday, 9am: A UNIQUE addition to the family at Woodside Falconry Centre will be an added attraction this weekend.
On Monday morning a baby emu hatched and this weekend visitors can see see it for the first time - and suggest a name.
But as Neil Mumby who with his wife Anita owns the Langworth attraction, explained, "It is difficult to give the baby a name as we will not know its sex until it is about two years old."
Proud emu parents Posh and Becks have lived at Woodside for three years and it is the first time a baby emu has ever been born at the Centre.
Neil said: "It is very rare for emus to hatch in captivity. The mother laid over 40 eggs this year and we were delighted to see that one had hatched. Emus are unusual because the father actually sits on the eggs and looks after them, he is very protective of his baby."
The as-yet-unnamed baby emu is doing well on a diet of turkey food and seeds and will stay in the breeding centre at Woodside until he or she is strong enough to join its parents in the field.
