De Aston's Duke of Edinburgh achievers

Students at De Aston School have been experiencing the great outdoors as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Awards programme.

Headed up by teachers Leanne Biggs and Jon Miller, 15 students completed a number of elements to achieve their bronze award.

Eleven students completed their silver award.

“The students get a lot out of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme,” said Mr Miller.

“It gets them out of  the classroom and helps them gain a great deal of independence.

“It teaches them holistic values and how to stand up for themselves.”

“The award also gives a boost to their CVs and the silver award gains them valuable UCAS points .”

The award scheme was reintroduced at the school last year and has proved very popular.

Elements of the awards include volunteering, physical, skills and expedition.

“The important thing is the students have to take responsibility for organising their own activities to complete the award programme,” added Mr Miller.

Working towards their silver awards, year 13 students Ben Wilson and Michael  Keast ran their own circuit training club at lunch times, which proved extremely popular.

Both students also impressed the leaders on the expedition with their camp craft skills.

Also undertaking voluntary clubs at school were year 11 students Ben Mcstay, George Lewis and Fred Fenwick, who all helped with year seven football last year.

Effie Warwick-John, Abi Hebert and Georgia Willey, also in year 11, all showed impressive skills in camp craft and map reading.

This year’s programme  is already underway, with  25 students signed up for  the bronze award since it was launched last week.

The silver award programme will be launched in the next few weeks.
