Council offers horse lovers free protection from thieves
Following the successful launch of the North Lincolnshire Horse Watch scheme, North Lincolnshire Council is offering free tack marking so horse lovers can protect their equipment from thieves.
The event takes place on Sunday, October 21, from 10.30am to 2pm, at Canswick House Livery Stables in Gunness (behind the wood yard).
Visitors can take advantage of free tack marking equipment, free North Lincolnshire Horse Watch signs and find out how to obtain free Smartwater.
Tack marking involves stamping leather saddles on the nearside, under the flap.
On synthetic saddles, the nearside stirrup bar is engraved.
You can also mark saddles with a micro chip or code with Smartwater.
Postcodes are the most easily recognised mark to use.
Alternatively at the event, you can buy a microchip pack from Datatag - £35 each or £99 for three.
The company Farmkey is also offering a £10 discount, plus £5 off if more than one horse is freezemarked – bringing the cost down to £40 per horse.
Coun Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for customer services, sport and leisure at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “The council is warning horse owners to visibly mark their property following a spate of thefts this year.
This will act as a deterrent to thieves and help recover stolen items.
“By offering free tack marking and Smartwater, we are making it easier for horse lovers to protect their equipment, which can be very expensive to replace if stolen.
“So just pop along on Sunday and take advantage of the free event.”
