Brigg’s Deputy Mayor Alec Depledge delivered a bombshell at the monthly Town Council meeting held in the town’s Angel Suite.

He announced his resignation just two months before he was expected to succeed John Kitwood as Town Mayor.

“I was motivated to serve alongside the Mayor, but I have no desire to succeed him,” he told a stunned chamber.

“I will not be standing as Mayor in May.”

Council accepted his resignation with regret, but agreed they had now to look forward.

Coun Penny Smith, a former Mayor, said: “I agree that you do need a run as Deputy Mayor before moving up to the top table.”

Coun Mike Campion, another former Mayor said: “Alec has done a splendid job as Deputy Mayor.”

A new Deputy Mayor will be elected at the council’s next meeting at the end of this month.
