Civic Dinner With A Difference!
MARKET Rasen Mayor Ken Bridger drummed up cash in support of his charity by taking up the sticks himself and beating it out of his guests at the town's Civic Dinner.
Coun Bridger had promised 'a civic evening with a difference' when he resurrected the fundraising tradition in the town, and he delivered on his pledge with a humorous and poetical speech set to the Lincolnshire Poacher.
The Mayor, his wife Jane and two friends made up the band The Fudgits, scratched together for the occasion, and wowed the assembled 87 civic and invited guests. During the busking session, hats were passed round for the Mayor's charities, the Foyer and the town Scouts, raising almost 300.
Former Mayor, Coun Laurie Povey, acted as MC at the Festival Hall gathering, Toasts were given by the vice-chairmen of the county and district council and, after a three-course dinner, further entertainment came from Caistor's Wild Wolds Women.
Coun Bridger said he particularly wanted to thank his wife Jane, along with friend Estelle on vocals and Dave on guitar.
"The name (The Fudgitts) came during the hours of painful practice when Dave, whose famous words when we had trouble getting the timing right were, 'We'll have to fudge it'.
"Thanks also to the dignitaries - Vice Chairman of Lincolnshire County Council (Coun Peter Bedford), Vice Chairman of West Lindsey District Council (Coun Owen Bierley), Mayor of Lincoln (Coun David Gratrick), Chairman of North Kesteven District Council (Coun Fred Ambridge) and Mayor of Grantham (Coun Ray Wootten).
"Thanks must also go to the Town Council for all their support in making the evening one to remember. A special thanks to all those who gave so generously and helped to raise nearly 300 for the charities."
