Citizen of the Year nomination for dance studio creator

Full-time carer and mother of two, Sophie Boulton has been nominated for the West Lindsey District Council Citizen of the Year Award, after leading a team of young people to create a dance, fitness and exercise studio.

As the chairman of Brookenby Happy Hearts Committee, Ms Boulton, 40, and her hard working young volunteers, totally gutted and decorated a large upstairs room in the community centre, to bring it back to full glory.

Ms Boulton was inspired by the enthusiasm of the youngsters, she said: “I just wanted to make sure that the young people in the area had somewhere to go and something to do.

“Nobody knew that the rooms upstairs were so big, only that there had once been a youth club there.”

She added: “I feel really embarrassed about being nominated but it is nice to know that the work I have done is appreciated.

“I usually take a back seat at meetings, but after hearing the ideas that the young people had, I really wanted to make it happen.

“I would really like to thank all the volunteers, both young and old; Daisy, my daughter, who is the committee secretary and all my family for supporting me.”

Ms Boulton, who has lived in Brookenby for six years, successfully applied for funding for the project and received £7,000 from the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Agency. This money will be used to train staff and buy equipment.Ms Boulton added: “My family and housework have taken a back seat, but hopefully soon, when we get the gym room up and running, I will be able to relax a bit more. “

The award ceremony will be held on Monday, December 10, 7pm at the Guildhall Gainsborough.
