Church groups fighting increasing debt in region

Church groups in the Market Rasen area say they are becoming increasingly aware of the burden of debt in our community and they want to do something about it.

“The churches would like to do what we can to help” said New Life Pastor, Paul Hiley.

“More and more families are being squeezed by the worsening economic climate and end up borrowing more to get a quick fix.

“This can be a fast track to disaster as they spiral further into debt fuelled by massive interest charges.”

Redundancies, sudden illness or unexpected expenditure can all play their part - but Mr Hiley says help is available and it is free.

“Our local C.A.P. (Christians Against Poverty) Centre has helped more than 20 individuals or couples since it opened,” he said, “but Estelle Forsythe, trained debt coach, is still able to see more clients.

“The service is absolutely free, confidential and without conditions - no church involvement is required.”

A public meeting has been arranged for Monday, March 11, at the Salvation Army Centre in John Street for all those affected by debt and those trying to help them.

The aim is to gather together agencies, churches and individuals involved in the relief of debt and make them aware of what services are available; individuals feeling burdened by debt are also welcome.

There will be presentations from CAP workers and service users, with plenty of time for questions, and organisers hope there will be enough interested people by the end of the evening to form a small working party to continue to raise the profile of CAP locally and help raise some further funds for it to continue.
