Church crumbles into its own cellar

TONNES of crumbling masonry fell from Market Rasen's parish church at the weekend, crashing into the building's cellar and damaging its roof.

As a consequence, the church path will remain closed for longer and the St Thomas' Tower Appeal which has almost raised the sum for previously identified repairs, will be put into overdrive.

Church services in the run up to Christmas are not affected, although an area inside has been cordoned off.

The path has been closed for more than two years after a previous lump of falling stonework highlighted structural weaknesses which, along with two aisle roofs would have cost 250,000 to repair.

Church treasurer Andrew Morrison said it was too soon to evaluate the latest damage, but the previously planned work intended to start in the spring would not be derailed, although priorities would alter.

"It just means that we will have to have the path closed for longer, work harder on our fundraising and hope that people can extend the generosity they've already shown."

Hanging stone which remains precarious on the south east buttress will have to be taken down as a matter of urgency, rubble taken from the roof and the roof repaired to stop rain coming in.

New, more secure fences will also be installed to reinforce the danger.

"People have been continuing to break through the fencing and walk through, with total disregard of the danger they're putting themselves in," he said.

• Over the weekend glass was smashed in the nearby Auction Shed in the Market Place. "It's daft that within 20 yards of where we are trying to raise money, there are people smashing up what's already been done," said Mr Morrison.
