Choral hit for brothers in 'psalms'!

Tuesday 5pm FORMER De Aston old boys Andrew and Patrick Hawes were at the centre of the biggest religious event to hit Lincolnshire for decades.

Andrew is now a canon and Patrick a classical composer and, together, they have written a choral piece in honour of the 100th anniversary of Lincoln Cathedral's most notable cleric, Bishop Edward King.

And for the icing on the cake, Andrew and Patrick's composition was played during a service given by the Most Reverend Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who has been making the first ever visit by a serving head of the Church of England to North East Lincolnshire.

For Canon Andrew it was like a step back in time at the centenary eucharist service held in King's honour, because Dr Williams is his former theology lecturer, but it was the first time Andrew had heard the music his brother Patrick, a former Classic FM composer in residence, had crafted to go with the lyrics to 'My Dearest Wish'.

Canon Hawes is now Parish Priest of St Michael's Edenham, near Bourne.

"I couldn't possibly explain just how big an impact both Edward King and Lincoln have had on me throughout my life," he said.

"Bishop King had a fantastic down-to-earth way of communicating with people about how to live a Christian life. He was also known as the Bishop of the Poor,"

Patrick said the subject matter for the choral piece combines all his strongest influences.

"My three great sources of inspiration are my country, those I love, and the love of God," he said. "Without my faith, I couldn't compose."

The brothers in music hail from Grimsby and in the 1950s their father was publican of the old Bluebell pub at Grasby, near Caistor. The family was living in Chapel St Leonards when the boys went to De Aston as boarders and Canon Hawes was there between 1966 and 1973.

"I met my wife there in 1972. She was one of the first girls to join the sixth form," Canon Hawes said. "We married in 1977 at St Thomas' Church in Market Rasen."

Cathedral Director of Music, Aric Prentice, was delighted to take delivery of the new work.

"The Cathedral Choir prides itself on commissioning new work from composers to keep the choral repertoire alive and fresh and we are delighted Patrick and Andy have collaborated to provide us with 'My Dearest Wish'," he said.

"Patrick writes in an accessible celebratory style which is a fitting tribute for the celebration of the life and ministry of one of Lincoln's great bishops."

The service for Bishop King was held at Lincoln Cathedral on March 6. He was Bishop of Lincoln from 1885 until his death on March 8, 1910.
