Up to 30 mums in Caistor are expected to take part in the world’s largest synchronised breastfeeding event.

The Big Latch On takes place this Friday, August 1, at 10.30am in the garden of Laura Sturdy who runs Holistic Mama, which offers child and mum related therapies and services.

“I got involved with The Big Latch On because as a doula I am passionate about supporting women to breastfeed, we registered our interest with them last month to hold an event locally and this will be the first time one has been held in Caistor. We are expecting 15-30 women to take part,” Laura said.

‘Doula’ is a Greek word meaning ‘woman servant or caregiver’ which means Laura ‘mothers the mothers’ both before and after pregnancy.

The Big Latch On, which aims to celebrate World Breast Feeding Week (August 1-7) started in New Zealand in 2005 and last year saw 14,536 mums in the synchronised event, with the week celebrated in 120 countries.

Yorkshire mum Sharan Spink, 44, recently received national media attention for breastfeeding her five-year-old girl, but Laura no longer breastfeeds her four and 14 year-olds.

“I whole heartedly support her decision to feed her daughter until her daughter is ready to stop. The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond. Research suggests that the “natural” duration of breastfeeding among humans would be somewhere between 2.5 years and 7.0 years,” Laura said.
