Cadet family gets behind volunteer call
A Brookenby family is getting behind a campaign to encourage more people to take up volunteering with the county’s Army Cadet Force.
Adult Under Officer Marie Fisher began volunteering at the Caistor detachment in 2010 after seeing how much her partner, Staff Sergeant Darren Bradley, enjoyed being a Cadet Force instructor.
And she took along daughter Toni with her to join as a cadet - now a Lance Corporal.
“As a family, the Cadet Force has offered us new challenges and exciting experiences,” said Marie.
“We have enjoyed many camps together and other activities that others don’t get the chance to share.
“My friends and family are often green with envy, especially when they hear what we’ve been up to at the weekend – like swinging on ropes in the great outdoors.
Being a family who are all involved in the Cadet Force also resulted in a special invitation last year.
“My daughter and I were selected together to attend the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert - something we’ll never forget,” added Marie.
Now Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force has organised an open day for more people, like Marie and Darren, to find out about volunteering with them.
The event will be held at Sobraon Barracks in Lincoln from 10am to 1pm this Saturday, January 26.
There will be talks and workshops led by Cadet Force personnel and current volunteers, as well as a chance to look around the Sobraon Barracks.
“Being an adult volunteer with the Army Cadet Force is an important role and an incredibly rewarding thing to do,” said Colonel Ian Sackree, ACF Lincolnshire Battalion Commandant. “We’re looking for adults who want to make a difference to young people’s lives.
“It’s a great chance for the volunteers to develop their own leadership skills, meet new people and give something back to their community.”
