Students Home From Volcano Terror

Friday 1pm CAISTOR students who escaped a rare volcanic eruption have hailed an Icelandic guesthouse owner Hinrik Thorsteinsson a hero for helping them to get out safely.

The students from Caistor Grammar School visited the Nordic island to take part in a geography field trip. They swam in the Blue Lagoon, studied mud puddles and fumeroles, and stayed in Mr Thorsteinsson's guesthouse which is below the volcano and near the black glacier, close to the small town of Hvolsvollur.

Deputy head Ed Cook said the young people visited geothermal areas and Geysir and as they returned to the guest house, there were concerns the volcano at the end of the valley was becoming active.

"Hinrik woke staff up with the ominous words: "The volcano is coming," and told us it was imperative to leave immediately," Mr Cook said.

"The area evacuation plan was put into operation and everyone had to leave the area. In the haste to leave, belongings were left behind.

Hinrik organised a coach at very short notice to come towards the volcanic valley to collect the Caistor Grammar School party."

Now the students are safely home, many consider the evacuation the highpoint of the trip and they were full of praise for the efforts of the Icelandic people in helping them, although concerned for their well-being because they remained in the danger area.

Student Lucy Hyle said: Until it became clear what was going on we were all panicking because all we could think of was lava pouring down the mountain."

Fellow student James Lait praised local people: "Thanks have to go to the owner of the guesthouse and the bus driver who both left their families to make sure we were safe."

Others students spoke of the 'brilliant' reaction of staff to the danger posed.
